According to Hindu mythology, after the self-immolation of Goddess Sati, a grief-stricken Lord Shiva wandered the universe carrying her charred body. In order to relieve Lord Shiva’s sorrow, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati's body using his Sudarshan Chakra. It is believed that Sati's head fell at this site, giving the temple its name — "Surkanda," derived from "Sirkhanda" (head).
